The rivers of Australia have always been the arteries of the continent's life. As white settlement push in from the coastlines, the rivers represented both survival for man and beast, and barriers to movement. Along their banks, hotels, pubs, inns and taverns sprang up to provide for the travellers, the settlers, the itinerant workers and the squatters. And Australia's mightiest river, the Murray defines much of the border between NSW and Victoria before flowing into the rich lands of South Australia.
